Our clinicians at the Hub

Joel Simmons

Born and raised in Cairns, Joel has spent the past 7 years working as an exercise physiologist across both hospital and outpatient settings.

A graduate from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Exercise Physiology (Clinical), he now runs his own practice- True North Exercise Physiology – based at Stratford Health Hub.

Joel brings extensive experience in supporting clients before and after joint replacement and reconstruction surgeries, as well as in reconditioning, Parkinson’s, cardiac rehabilitation and a wide range of chronic and metabolic conditions.
He has also worked alongside cardiologists in cardiac stress testing, contributing to the assessment and monitoring of heart health.

He also has a strong interest in oncology, having run an oncology rehab clinic in his previous employments. Joel is committed to helping people improve physical conditioning, boost energy levels, ease treatment related side effects and support long term recovery through targeted exercise.

Outside of work, Joel loves heading off on extended fishing trips to remote parts of Cape York and Northern Territory. When closer to home in Cairns, you’ll often find him riding his Harley, cheering on the North Queensland Cowboys, or catching up with mates.

Joyce Matthijssen

Joyce has worked as a physiotherapist since the early 2000s, training and beginning her career in the Netherlands, before moving to beautiful Edinburgh, Scotland to gain more experience. She arrived in Australia in 2008 with her husband, looking for a new adventure and they have since called Australia home.

Joyce operates two businesses out of Stratford Health hub.

My Body & Brain Physio

Joyce’ professional focus lies in musculoskeletal health, which is everything muscles, spine, joints, & nerves and just can’t help herself looking at all her clients from a very holistic point of view. She also cares deeply about preventative health care and the importance of lifestyle factors. Joyce recently started the new multidisciplinary bone building program at Stratford Health Hub.

My Parkinson’s

Joyce is also highly specialized in Parkinson’s disease. Since finishing university, she has remained actively involved in this area and witnessed considerable advances in research and treatment. She is dedicated to ensuring her clients receive the best possible outcomes, providing education on relevant topics and modifiable variables, lifestyle factors, and her main area of expertise: exercise, movement, and mobility.

Beyond her work, Joyce enjoys traveling and exploring new destinations with her family. After a memorable trip around Australia with their camper trailer that finished in Cairns, she immediately fell in love with the area. Now, Joyce is captivated by the tropical environment and frequently enjoys walks in its natural beauty.

Jennifer Earl

Jen completed her Dietetic studies at Indiana state university in the USA on a Tennis Scholarship but grew up in the vibrant and multi-cultural South Africa. She went on to work in the UK and travelled extensively before growing roots and settling down in amazing Australia.  Jen relocated to Cairns from chilly  Wagga Wagga more than 10 years ago and loves living in the tropics.

Jen lives, eats and breathes “your health is your greatest wealth. ” She is passionate about health and wellbeing and helping people navigate their personal nutrition journey.
Jen encourages you to let go of the “diet” and helps to guide you to make small positive changes to achieve realistic diet and lifestyle goals.  Jen juggles a busy work and home life herself, so she gets that life is demanding and is big on keeping things grounded, realistic, helping you stay accountable, and will support you, step by step through your journey.

Jen’s sense of adventure and many years travelling, exploring and learning  new places people and things; led her to study yoga and Ayurveda. So in her spare time she teaches yoga, enjoys catching a class herself.  Generally loves the outdoors, sports, beaches, waterfalls, but she also likes to slow down and retreat at home; quietly cook and spending time with her family and dog.

The people who make the Hub smooth sailing

Our Practice Manager

Kerry keeps the wheels turning on everything that isn’t clinical! With a background in healthcare administration across paediatrics, chiropractic, rehabilitation, and hospital settings, she brings a wealth of experience (and a good dose of humour) to the team.

Before finding her home in health, Kerry dabbled in everything from diving and the super-yacht industry to tourism and construction — truly a jack of all trades. A business degree holder and proud mum of three (plus two fur babies), Kerry and her husband have called Cairns home permanently since 2019, after many years living in Papua New Guinea.

She loves the variety, fast pace, and genuine connections that come with working in the health industry — and gets the warm and fuzzies knowing her work helps support the people who walk through our doors.

Our Accountant

Ronald is determined to keep our books balanced. He has been an accountant for nearly 30 years in a variety of fields: Amsterdam Police, a power station in WA, in a public Hospital in Sydney, a private hospital in the NT and now also here in Cairns in the public health sector.

He did a short stint as an accountant for an educational institution and was so inspired that he studied to become a teacher in business and maths. He worked as a teacher for 2 years, before deciding that he preferred to actually do accounting rather than teach accounting.

He was roped into this position by his wife Joyce, when they decided that they were going to start up a new business and hasn’t looked back since.
Outside of work, Ronald enjoys hanging out with his family, loves travelling and is a keen formula one racing fan. Ronald enjoys all sorts of exercise with and even did 2x Ironman Cairns 70.3 as a cyclist in a team.
